Arlington, WA – On Friday, October 20th, morning show hosts Jen Pirak and Curt Kruse made a surprise visit to Pioneer Elementary School to honor Mr. Derek Swan as STAR 101.5’s Teacher of the Week.
Mr. Swan is a 4th grade teacher at Pioneer Elementary in Arlington. Along with being named STAR 101.5’s Teacher of the Week, he was presented with gifts from the Washington State Potato Commission and McDonalds. He also received an award plaque, and a check for $101.5 to help pay for classroom supplies. He was nominated for this award by a parent of one of his current students, who said he has an amazing ability to, “communicate and connect with his students”.
Being a parent himself, Mr. Swan knows how to meet kids wherever they are and can adjust his teaching practices for every student’s needs. He does his best to build a learning environment with both humor and understanding for his students.
After being named STAR 101.5’s Teacher of the Week, Mr. Swan recognized his students and staff saying, “I have such a great class and I work with such great people; I’m very fortunate”. Mr. Swan also discussed how passionate and grateful he is about teaching, and said, “There’s not many people who can say they truly love their job every day, but I really do!”. His favorite part about teaching is seeing his students be challenged at first but then later use what they’ve learned to overcome those challenges.
