10/13 – Washington Elementary School’s Catherine DeJong

Auburn, WA – On Friday, October 13th, morning show hosts Jen Pirak and Curt Kruse made a surprise visit to Washington Elementary School to honor Mrs. Catherine (Cathy) DeJong as STAR 101.5’s Teacher of the Week.

Mrs. DeJong is a 2nd grade teacher at Washington Elementary. Along with being named STAR 101.5’s Teacher of the Week, she was presented with flowers, an award plaque, and a check for $101.5 to help pay for classroom supplies. She was nominated for this award by a former parent who had a student in Mrs. DeJong’s class at the start of the pandemic. That parent described Mrs. DeJong as an example of a perfect teacher and that she always helps others without expecting anything in return.

During the pandemic, Mrs. DeJong wanted to help her students, “get their wheels on the wagon” by providing a fun and rewarding learning environment despite the circumstances. Mrs. DeJong and her husband would spend every weekend delivering cookies to her students just so she could check on them and make sure that they were doing ok while learning from home.

After being presented with the award for Teacher of the week, Mrs. DeJong thought it was ‘incredible’ and ‘humbling’ to be nominated by a former parent and honored by the station.
