Covid-19 no longer ‘extenuating circumstance’ to cancel Airbnb reservation

Something to consider if you plan to use Airbnb for your next vacation getaway. Starting in June, guests will no longer be able to cancel without penalty due to Covid.

Since March 2020, Airbnb allowed customers to cancel because of Covid and get a refund or credit.

The company says that with medical advancements and so many people vaccinated, it’s eliminated Covid as an “extenuating circumstance” for all bookings made after May 31.

So, if you are close to making a reservation, you may want to do it before the end of the month.

In a blogpost, Airbnb noted that cancellation policies vary by host, and that almost two-thirds of current listings offer “moderate” or “flexible” cancellation policies. But even in those cases, refunds will not be provided for last-minute cancellations.

For hosts, Covid will still be considered an extenuating circumstance, should they need to cancel the booking.

Airbnb says it plan to launch travel insurance for those who book on its platform in the coming months.
