What to do if you didn’t file your 2021 tax return yet

So, you missed the April 18 deadline for filing your tax return. It happens.

The IRS encourages you to file as soon as possible.

If you’re owed a refund, there’s no penalty for filing late. But if you owe money and missed the deadline without requesting an extension, you should file quickly to limit penalties and interest.

Members of the military who served or are currently serving in a combat zone may qualify for extra time to file and pay any taxes due without penalties and interest.

NOTE: If you don’t owe taxes, you can still file your 2021 tax return to claim the Child Tax Credit for last year at any point until April 15, 2025, without any penalty.

More Info from the IRS: Taxpayers who owe and missed the April 18 filing deadline should file now to limit penalties and interest; not too late to claim the Child Tax Credit for 2021
