SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — What was it that Frodo said to Sam? “I am glad you are here with me. Here at the end of all things.” A little dramatic perhaps, but we’re about to bid adieu to 2021 and while there were good memories made, I can’t help but hope that what comes next is better than what came before.
Here’s a look at all the titles leaving Netflix in December. There are quite a few familiar faces that seem to come and go so frequently that I never have the opportunity to miss them. However, some of you might be disturbed to learn that the Forensic Files Collections 1-9 are leaving. You’ll have to find a new dark obsession. There are plenty out there.
Here are four titles that caught my eye.
Before I Fall
(Leaving 12/7/21)
Zoey Deutch stars as Samantha Kingston, a popular high school student, who finds herself reliving the same day over and over again. “Before I Fall” isn’t played for laughs or gasps, which separates the film from the obvious comparisons to “Groundhog’s Day” and “Happy Death Day.” It’s a coming-of-age drama where the protagonist literally cannot move on before she’s learned from her mistakes.
It Comes at Night
(Leaving 12/8/21)
The trailer suggests a straightforward horror film but “It Comes at Night” is more of a slow-burn thriller that takes place after a disease has left the few survivors to live in paranoid isolation. So, when Paul’s wife talks him into letting two strangers with a child into their home the audience instinctively knowns that something unpleasant is about to happen.
Captain Fantastic
(Leaving 12/25/21)
Viggo Mortensen was nominated for an Oscar, Golden Globe and a BAFTA for his performance as Ben Cash. a father who lives off the grid somewhere in the mountains of Washington. A major life event causes Ben to take his family back into society where his children question his parenting decisions and begin to see the world from a new perspective.
Pan’s Labyrinth
(Leaving 12/31/21)
“Pan’s Labyrinth” is a fairytale that takes place in 1994, just five years after the Spanish Civil War. The story is focused on ten-year-old Ofelia who may actually be the reincarnated Princess Moanna who strayed from her father’s underground kingdom and became mortal and died many years ago. Writer/director Guillermo del Toro mixes fantasy, Spanish history, and horror in a film that is magical and often horrific. There are monsters lurking in the shadows and some of them are men.
