Mt. Vernon street festival and trail day event offers fun run, garage sale, cute dog contest, bike raffle, children’s activities, garage sale
Families celebrated National Trails Day and their community the first weekend in June at the Kulshan Street Festival. And staff from the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest helped. A fun run and guided hike took families through a street fair where wildlife biologist Don Gay taught youth about forest “critters.” Gay also talked to kids and their parents about job opportunities in biology, fire, recreation, forestry and civil engineering.
Kids climbed through Fire Engine 12 and Mt. Baker North Zone Engine Crew demonstrated their firefighting equipment. A cutest dog contest, garage sale, sidewalk coloring station and bike raffle entertained approximately 300 participants. The event was hosted by Mt. Vernon Parks Department and Police Department as part of the Kulshan Creek Neighborhood Kids program. The police department began the program in 2007 with the Forest Service to expose Hispanic kids to the outdoors and careers in natural sciences. They conduct monthly after-school and weekend outings throughout the summer.
