An unnidentified, until now, "ship" has been hanging out off the shore of Titlow Beach in Tacoma for the last week. The hazard to navigation has been wandering up and down Puget Sound waters south of the Tacoma Narrows bridge. Driven by the tides and winds, the mysterious vessel finally made an approach near the shore and quickly crashed into old pilings not used since 'Mosquito Fleet' ferry boat days. The drama was heightened by the sound and vibration of a passing train duriing the 6:12 PM event. The vessel turned out to be a floating mass of tangled reeds, probably dislodged and sent floating subsequent to recent high tides and winds. No one was hurt in the incident, but a couple of intrepid observers had been tempted to try to mount the mass prior to its crash. It would not have supported them very well, but they would have had an interesting ride!
