The Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition is a business plan competition focused on sustainable, implementable and innovative ideas to combat social issues worldwide. Now in its 5th year, the competition is hosted by the Global Business Center and the Foster School and invites not only UW students, but many international team members who have applied from 16 different countries this year. The competition will take place on February 27 where the teams will present their business plans to local Seattle judges including Microsoft, PATH, Integrated Health Development Solutions, and the Gates Foundation to compete for up to $20,000 in prize money. The 2009 GSEC business ideas focus on a range of subjects, including sustainable aquaculture in Tanzania, rural healthcare in India, pedal-powered telephones in Nicaragua, water treatment in Nepal, and anti-counterfeiting technology for West Africa. This is a good opportunity to meet and greet the team members and the judges, and to learn more about their potential plans for a specific social issue.
