(Poulsbo, Kitsap County) Poulsbo Fire Department, Navy Region NW Keyport and North Kitsap Fire and Rescue responded to a waterfront dock fire this morning just before 9am on Virginia Loop near Keyport. Rescue crews arrived within 6 minutes to find the end of an 80’ dock on fire. The fire was caused from faulty electrical wires which ignited Styrofoam and rubber underneath the dock. “Firefighters were hampered by the fire’s location, underneath the gangplank leading to the floating dock, “ said Poulsbo Fire Department Battalion Chief Gillard, “Despite being slowed by the safety concerns of fighting a fire underneath the only access and of working in full protective equipment over the water, the fire was contained within 15 minutes.” A small amount of debris was released into Liberty Bay and Poulsbo Fire officials notified the Coast Guard and the Department of Ecology. Damage estimates are unknown at this time.
The dock belongs to a Poulsbo couple. The 69 year old woman said “I was cooking breakfast when I looked out of the dining room window and noticed the smoke. I grabbed a fire extinguisher and the neighbor grabbed his garden hose, but the smoke was just too thick.”
