To Whom it may concern,
I am a federal law enforcement and fire rescue trainer living in Bellingham city (though I spend traveling most of my year training domestic and foreign special operations units.) Most of my local work has been with the Bellingham Fire Department, Whatcom County Fire Rescue, and the US Customs and Border Protection Office of Air and Marine. It's an honor to work with these men and women, and if there's an article in this, I would humbly ask if they could be given credit for their support of my final competition before my retirement.
I will be competing at the 2010 World Martial Arts Games - the Olympics of martial arts competition recognized by the IOC/TAFISA: http://www.worldmartialartsgames.com September 17-19 in Los Vegas at Mandalay Bay, with 22 countries representing and 2,500 athletes competing. Though I also accepted position on the US National Team Coaching Staff, I will be competing in Sport Jiujitsu, Submission Grappling and MMA divisions. As a 40 year old, I'll be the oldest fighting member of the team.
My wife and two children endure the endless worries of having a husband and father who fights for a living, but they respect the nobility of the discipline and support me in my belief that preparing others with better training creates greater options, better discretion and clearer perspicacity when facing hostility and violence.
This will be my final world tournament and I shall retire. I've been an international champion in both Sambo (Russian submission grappling) and Sanshou (Chinese kickboxing), but when given the opportunity to proudly wear USA on my back one more time, I respectfully accepted the chance with gratitude.
