Sometime in the last two weeks of July, our Public Storage unit on Avalon Way in West Seattle was robbed. Over $6,000 worth of drums, cymbals, toy collections, and other property was stolen. The mystery is how the thieves got in. Our unit is inside, on the second floor. A secret code is required to take the elevator there. There are two locks on the unit, and neither of them was broken. There was no sign of break in, although the backplate on the lock was a bit loose. Video surveillance cameras are mounted near the doors, but there are none on the floor itself. Police told us that the thieves often just move property from one unit to another. We suspect this may be "inside job" by empoyees for their accomplices. The district manager of Public Storage has not returned our phone call so far. We would like all Public Storage customers, especially this location, to know that their property may not be as safe as they think it is, and to check the contents as soon as possible.

I've used Public Storage for many years, and never had a problem. It will all depend on the individual francise, though I'm sure. Be alert - don't let people follow you in, don't have expensive stuff in plain view as people walk by (use boxes),

Looks like you made a common mistake. NEVER use the locks they sell. They have master keys to them. ALWAYS use your own lock!

Had a TV and all my electronics stolen from my unit on Lake City Way. They simply cut off the locks and replaced them with there own so it looks as if nothing happened to the people that walk by. They ended up taking $6,800 worth of stuff.
