Macklemore and Ryan Lewis's climb to fame has been an explosive one, but last night, the rap duo became official superstars, rocking the MTV Video Music Awards with an emotional performance of their pro-marriage equality anthem, "Same Love." The pair also took home three awards, including Best Hip-Hop Video.

The two were joined by Seattle vocalist Mary Lambert, as well as special guests Jennifer Hudson and A$AP.

"They let some independent hip-hop artists up here at the VMAs!" Macklemore exclaimed when he accepted his first award.

All things told, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis took home three of the six awards they were eligible for, tying with superstar Justin Timberlake. The pair walked away with Moonmen for Best Hip-Hop Video, Best Cinematography, and Best Video with a Social Message, for "Same Love."

They beat out Beyonce, Drake and other major national artists.
