14th Annual Kent & Alan Wiener Dog Races

 2010 Wiener Dog Competitors

It’s that time of year again! It’s the 14th annual Kent and Alan Wiener Dog Races at Emerald Downs Saturday afternoon, July 24th.  There will be 24 purebred dachshunds competing at the event. A total of three heats will take place, which includes two qualifying heats of 12 dogs each.   The top 6 from each of the two heats will advance to the final race. Returning 1st and 2nd place finishers, Lucy Lu and Reggie, will be back to defend the titles they have held since 2007 in what is sure to be a fierce competition.

 
Though 20 lucky dogs have been pre-selected, two more will have a chance for a final race slot at Saturday’s main event by competing in the Red Carpet Wiener Dog Rally at Fisher Plaza on Thursday, July 22nd.  Purebred Wiener Dogs (and their owners) can register to compete  starting at 11 a.m. and must be checked in no later than 11:45 a.m.  The rally is a sight to see as the wiener dogs will give it their all on the red carpets to be one of two dogs to race at the big track at Emerald Downs.   The public is welcome to attend this free event and appropriately, Dante’s Hot Dogs will be available for purchase to enjoy during the rally.
 
Bring the whole family to Emerald Downs on Saturday afternoon for this fun-filled day with free face painting, pony rides, and, of course, both horse and wiener dog races! Tickets will be available on site and children under 17 get in free.  Gates open at 9:30 a.m. and the first horse race will begin at 2 p.m. with the wiener dog action beginning at approximately 3 p.m. - rain or shine.
 
Everyone at Emerald Downs will get a chance to leave a winner.  Adult guests can to enter to win at a trip to see Rob Thomas in Las Vegas and a stay at the Red Rock Casino Resort and Spa courtesy of Atlantic Records. Kids will have the chance to “Guess the Winning Wiener Dog” and win a weekend stay for the family at Hotel Vintage Park.
 
The 1st place pooch from Emerald Downs and their owner will receive weekend accommodations at a Kimpton hotel, two year’s worth of dog treats, and, of course, a coveted, guaranteed spot in next year’s Kent & Alan Wiener Dog Races.
