Panther Day Camp for Children with Diabetes
Diabetes Association Of Pierce County
A locally run Camp for children with Type 1 diabetes is in desperate need of donations. This wonderful camp gives type 1 children an opportunity to learn how to live happier, healthier and longer lives as fun a to have a fun place to be themselves. The week long summer camp is locally run by the Diabetes Association of Pierce County is called Panther Day Camp and is for Type 1 diabetic children. This amazing camp gives type 1 children a place to not only learn about diabetes and how to live a long a healthy life with their condition, but provides a place for them to feel normal, where every kid there checks their sugar and counts carbohydrates. Everyone from the doctors and nurses to the counselors donates their time to give these great kids a wonderful camp experience. The camp itself is funded almost entirely on grants and donations, each year they struggle to get medical supplies donated and cover the cost for as many children as possible, as most of the families can not afford the $350.00-400.00 cost of sending their child to camp. 85% of the children who come to camp do so on a scholarship that is paid for by those grants and donations. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, called beta cells. While its causes are not yet entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental triggers are involved. Its onset has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. There is nothing you can do to prevent T1D, and—at present—nothing you can do to get rid of it. However one thing that makes fundraising hard is the lack of information about the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes, a lot of people think that these children are overweight or became diabetic due to poor or un-healthly eating.
